This Eagles season has been tough to watch and the past few weeks in particular have been dreadful. This Monday, the Eagles (3-7) host the Carolina Panthers (2-8) on ESPN on a national telecast. As bad as the past few weeks have been, this Monday has the potential to be the worst of the season.
Starting by looking at the game itself, there is nothing about it that makes any fan excited. When scheduled for a Monday night game, it had the potential to be a big matchup. Featuring at the time two young, exciting teams, however both teams have not lived up to expectations and will most likely be playing meaningless football for the last 6 games of the season.
The atmosphere at the Linc on Monday will be hostile, and not in the way it usually is. Fans are fed up with this team and the organization in general. They are mad that the team has shown no heart on the field, they are mad that Andy Reid has lost control and still has a job and they are mad that they paid all that money for season tickets and now have 3 meaningless tickets that they most likely can’t sell. If the Panthers at any point of the game begin to take control, the crowd is going to get to a point of hysteria that we haven’t seen during the Reid era. This is the most frustrating time to be an Eagles fan in recent memory and mixing that with a national audience could get ugly.
Along with that, a nationally televised game is always annoying for fans of an underachieving team, especially when they are playing another lowly team. ESPN will of course have to run through all the miserable things that have happened with this team this season throughout the whole broadcast, doing nothing but throwing salt in the wounds this season has left for Eagles fans. Adding to that is the fact that Jon Gruden will be in the booth calling the game, Gruden of course could be a candidate to take over coaching the Eagles when the inevitable firing of Andy Reid comes. You just know there will almost certainly be awkward conversations with Gruden about whether he would be interested in taking the job in Philly all night.
We thought just having the team play as bad as they have been would be the only reasons it would be hard to watch games recently, but this week everything is coming together at the right time to make this one have the potential to be historically hard to watch. Take caution while watching, it could be dangerous.
