The Phillies starting rotation has definitely changed since opening day. Roy Halladay is not having a typical Halladay season as he has a 7-7 record, with a 3.95 ERA, and 95 strikeouts. Cliff Lee is just having a bad season all around and it shows in his record. He has a 2-7 record, with a 3.78 ERA, and 151 strikeouts. Lee has been given leads this season and cannot hold them or the offense does not score enough runs for him.
Cole Hamels has been the Phillies best pitcher on this staff this season. He has a 2.94 ERA, with a 14-6 record, and 168 strikeouts. Hamels is definitely looking like a NL Cy Young candidate. Now Vance Worley is having a solid season even though his record does not show it. He has six wins and eight losses, with 4.11 ERA, and 100 strikeouts. The Phillies starting rotation started to change after they traded away Joe Blanton to the Dodgers and Kyle Kendrick moved into his spot.
But there is one pitcher that you maybe forgetting who could be in the Phillies starting rotation in September and that is Tyler Cloyd. You might be asking yourself who is Tyler Cloyd. Well let me introduce you all to Tyler Cloyd the star pitcher of the Phillies minor league system.
Cloyd was drafted in the 18th round by the Phillies back in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. Cloyd had a rough time in the minors from 2008-2010. But in 2011, that is when things started to turn around for the young right handed pitcher.
In 2011 between Clearwater and Reading, he had a 9-4 record, with 2.77 ERA, and 138 strikeouts in 146 innings pitched. This year, the Phillies organization saw something in Cloyd and kept him in Reading and what did he do but impress. In four games started for the Reading Phillies, Cloyd had a 3-0 record with 1.80 ERA and 20 strikeouts.
With that impressive stat line in Reading, he got promoted to AAA Lehigh Valley and he has been impressive there as well. So far, this season Cloyd has a record of 12-1, with 91 strikeouts, and a 2.27 ERA. This only tells me that he is ready for the big leagues, which I think will happen in September.
Phillies fans do you think Cloyd will be called up in September? Comment below with your thoughts.
