There’s been a lot of talk and speculation going around that the Eagles are looking to shop around and trade pro bowl cornerback Asante Samuel. Last year and for most of his career Asante played the left side of the field recording a total of 45 interceptions and returning 5 of them for tds.
Howie Roseman was at the owners meeting yesterday and was approached by other teams showing interest in Asante with one of them being the Tennessee Titans. The Titans lost Cortland Finnegan in free agency to the St. Louis Rams and while the Titans starting cb’s are Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner, loosing Cortland was a huge blow to there secondary. The Eagles will be looking in return a 3rd round pick. A similar pick that they earlier gave up to acquire linebacker DeMeco Ryans form Houston. If the Eagles do actually end up trading Asante to the Titans for a 3rd round pick, then there would be a lot of wiggle room as far as cap space is concerned.
There has been no doubt that there where talks all through last season about how will the three pro bowl cornerbacks will be used and if possible how would all three of them be on the field at the same time. Now that drc is most likely the candidate to play lcb, after dominating at the end of last season, the time for Samuel has come. He would possibly be able to stay if he were able to play the slot, but he’s just not physical enough at the line of scrimmage.
Howie Roseman told Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer that, “ We feel like corner is a position of strength right now, but at the same time, when you talk to teams around the league, you’re talking about maybe some positions that you have a strength and maybe that they have a weakness. You try to see if that’s a match whether that’s cornerback or anywhere else.”(Philadelphiaeagles.com)
If the Eagles are able to get a 3rd round pick for Samuel, that would be great considering that they can get the later round pick back from when they traded with Houston. Depending on his performance this year, the pick would either come in 2013, or if he was to sign a new contract now, it would count for this years draft, instead of next years.
