The Philadelphia Eagles lost their sixth straight games as they fell to the previously 3-6 Washington Redskins 31-6. Everything that has gone wrong, has for the Eagles, and the season still has six games remaining. Michael Vick suffered a really nasty concussion last week and now running back LeSean McCoy has suffered a pretty nasty one as well. Add that with the Eagles losing three offensive linemen to season ending injuries, this season has been a nightmare.
The Eagles started the game off with the football, but turned it over on only their third offensive play of the game. Nick Foles hit Brent Celek right in the numbers, but it bounced right off his hands and was picked off by Deangelo Hall. He took it inside the Eagles 10 yard line and the Redskins scored two plays later.
It’s hard to get a good feel for Nick Foles at this point. He completed 21 out of 46 passes for 202 yards and two interceptions. He also had very little pass protection, numerous offensive line penalties and several drops by his receivers. DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin combined for just two catches for five yards (all by Jackson).
Foles struggled in his last season in college at Arizona because he had little pass protection. His first season in the pros hasn’t been any better. He also had very little help in the running game. The Eagles called just 20 running plays compared to 47 passing plays. Most rookie quarterbacks with not much protection are going to struggle with an unbalanced offense.
The Eagles offense could only muster up two field goals. The got as close as 7-3 and 17-6 before imploding. The Eagles offense has struggled to put up point all season long. Now with both their starting quarterback, running back and three-fifths of their offensive line out, it’s hard to see that trend ending anytime soon. Add that with a really soft defense and this team isn’t going to end a six game losing streak anytime in the near future.
Right now Eagles fans don’t even know if they should root for this team to win or just hope they lose out so they can get the best draft pick possible. It’s gotten that bad in Philadelphia this season. Anyone who doesn’t think major changes are coming this offseason isn’t paying attention.
