Everyone is excited about Nick Foles.
He has done a good job as a quarterback so far against third-stringers in the preseason. The rookie quarterback completed 12 of 19 passes for 146 yards and threw for two touchdowns in the Eagles’ 27-10 preseason victory over the Browns Friday night.
These weren’t only the good numbers Foles posted. He took control of the huddle, and he was able to take many hits and bounce back nicely. He never let his mistakes get to him.
But, it was just a preseason game. Teams don’t go full speed on defense in preseason, and there’s no pressure in this stage. Therefore, it is hard to make much out of Foles’ preseason performance, especially considering the Eagles play the Browns in the season opener in two weeks.
Still, it’s hard to not wonder what the third-round draft pick can do as a starting quarterback soon enough. He was drafted with the idea he will be the starter in a few years. It could certainly be sooner rather than later that Foles becomes the go-to guy.
With Michael Vick being injury-prone, there is a good chance Foles could be quarterbacking this year. And based off what we have seen thus far from both quarterbacks, that would be a good thing. This gives the rookie a chance to learn on the job and see what’s it like to handle the pressure.
Let’s be clear. The Eagles will go as far as Vick goes. That means he has to be healthy if they have designs of going to the postseason. It’s hard to believe Foles can take them far in smooth sailing.
That said, Vick’s injury may not be the worst thing for the Eagles, just as Kolb’s injury was the turning point for the Eagles two seasons ago. It will give the team an opportunity to develop a young quarterback. Sooner or later, Foles will have to learn. He is better off learning now rather than wait a few years.
There’s no question Eagles head coach Andy Reid drafted Foles with the idea Vick can never say healthy. The head coach didn’t have to say it. His action said it all. It is also no secret that Vick has only played in all 16 games in only one season. This was in 2006 when he was with Atlanta.
It won’t be long until Foles become the starting quarterback. It could be next year. It’s hard to believe Vick will be quarterbacking next year, as his contract is not guaranteed for another year. The Eagles will likely move to in a different direction if the kid progresses and develops enough that he can start. They are not going to pay him $15.5 million next year to get hurt often.
It might as well be for the best if Vick is gone next year. As great of a story he is, he is not the guy that can lead to the Eagles championship. It’s hard to take him seriously when he gets hurt during the year. He can’t be reliable when no one knows when he can recover from his injuries. It’s not something the team should go through next year.
Let’s be honest. Vick is not an elite quarterback as people make him out to be. He still can’t read defenses. He has no idea how to slide no matter how much he learns. His throwing motion can be frustrating to watch. He throws interceptions at the wrong time. He is seemingly incapable of making intelligent decisions, especially those revolving around when to slide and when to take an unnecessary hit. To put it bluntly, he is overrated.
He made one postseason appearance as an Eagle, and it was one to forget. He could not make plays against the Packers defense, and he was flustered all game long. He was why the Eagles lost to the Packers two years ago.
It’s hard to think Vick is going to learn new tricks at his age. He is set in his own ways. There is no way he will stop running and make plays. Reid tried his best to change his quarterback’s approach, and it hasn’t worked as people make it out to be.
This year would not be a waste if Vick misses time or be out for the year. This would be a good opportunity for Foles to grow into his role as the quarterback. He can work with his unit and start creating chemistry with them. The sooner he can figure it out, the better off he and the Eagles will be. It may be the best situation.
The Eagles were not winning the Super Bowl one way or another this year. Vick does not have it in him to get them there. Maybe Foles can one day, and that’s why the team is better served letting him take the leap now.
Just seeing the rookie do his thing in preseason, Eagles’ fans can take solace in knowing that all is not lost.
