The Phillies came into tonight’s game versus the Marlins just like every other game this month, a must win. They came into tonight being six games out of the wild card with 22 games left. For the Phillies to make the wild card they would have to go 18-4 and the Cardinals would have to go 11-11.
Jumping into tonight’s game, on the mound for the Phillies was Kyle Kendrick who has been pitching well as of late and his success would continue tonight against the fish. Kendrick was throwing a gem against the Marlins as he would take a no-hitter to the seventh inning and the only player to register a hit off of him would be catcher Rob Brantly.
Other than Brantly no other Marlins’ player got a hit off of Kendrick. Kendrick would finish the night with seven innings pitched, only giving up two hits, one earned run, only walking three hitters and striking out eight. I would say that is a pretty good outing.
Before Kendrick left the mound the Phillies’ offense would give him some run support in the fifth inning, as outfielder Domonic Brown would crush a two run home run to right field to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The Phils would increase their lead in the same inning as third baseman Michael Martinez would score on a wild pitch giving the Phillies a 3-0 lead.
This all the Phils would need as the Marlins would only get one run off of Kyle Kendrick in the seventh inning by a Donovan Solano sacrifice fly.
From there to end the game, the bullpen combination of De Fratus, Diekman, and Bastardo would only give up one hit and strikeout four as the Phillies came away with the win tonight 3-1 over the Miami Marlins.
Kyle Kendrick got his ninth win of the season and Antonio Bastardo got his first save of the season as he pitched a perfect ninth inning. The Phillies record now improves to 70-71 on the season and they are one game under .500.
They are also 5.5 games out of the wild card as of right now but could be 5 games out by the end of the night if the St. Louis Cardinals loss to the San Diego Padres.
