The news keeps getting worse for Phillies fans. Today, Roy Halladay was placed on the 15-day DL, and Phillies insider Jim Salisbury says the injury is more of a 6-8 week time frame. This is a huge blow to a team looking to charge back up to the top of the standings.
The Phillies must be players in the Roy Oswalt sweepstakes in order to sure up their staff. It is being reported by ESPN that he is very close to signing with Texas, but maybe Ruben Amaro, Jr. will swoop in with the finesse and grace that he used to steal Cliff Lee away from the Rangers.
Reports from Clearwater are positive regarding Ryan Howard, and Chase Utley is fielding ground balls as well as shagging balls in left field. The Phillies will have an off day on Thursday, meaning they can buy one more time around the rotation without a fifth starter, but they will have to fill the hole either from the minor leagues, or by making a move for another available starting pitcher such as Oswalt. Kyle Kendrick has already been summoned from the bullpen and starter by committee doesn’t seem to be a viable option for more than one or two starts.
For a team battling all year, this is just one more character building exercise as they try to piece together this season.
