The Philadelphia Eagles are in the midst of their mandatory mini-camp, the last set of practices for the team until they convene at Lehigh University in late July for training camp. Having undergone three OTAs, head coach Andy Reid has a good feel for where his team is and where they need to be before the start of the season.
Reid also knows what’s motivating the squad. And in large part, he thinks it’s the energy, focus and motivation of Mike Vick. On Tuesday, Reid said of his quarterback,
Michael knows what he needs to do and he’s worked like crazy. One of the reasons that we’ve had the attendance here that we’ve had and one of the reasons that we’ve had energy is Michael Vick. He was here and he hasn’t missed a workout. He’s the one who’s out here motivating that energy and making the players around him be here. He’s done a great job of that this offseason.
This year marks the first full offseason that Vick has had as a starter for the Eagles and by all accounts he is taking the additional time he has to prepare and improve his play seriously. That dedication and motivation has been noticed by his teammates and is influencing their work habits as well.
Vick is drawing inspiration to improve than ever from a number of places, including from the NFL Network’s top 100 list. Vick was vocal on 97.5 The Fan about his feelings on the list, calling them “a joke.” As a competitor, he will use the perceived slight to show his peers that they are dead wrong to list him as the 70th best player in the league.
I feel like I’m one of the best at what I do. It’s somebody else’s opinion, and I have to prove them wrong and make them say otherwise.
Mike Vick’s belief in himself and his teammates is part of the energy and drive the Eagles have shown thus far in OTAs and minicamp. That drive, combined with the talent we know is on this team, will hopefully turn into the successful season we know this team can put together. It’s up to them to it.
