In the middle of the night, Chad Johnson (formerly Chad Ochocino) tweeted how he couldn’t sleep, hoping not to miss his flight to Philadelphia this morning. Is this just a cry for attention or are the Eagles actually going to try him out?
The Eagles are battered and bruised at the wide receiver position – but not broken. Riley Cooper has been sidelined with a broken collarbone and Jeremy Maclin has been day-to-day with a hip pointer that he re-aggravated in the Ravens game on Sunday. DeSean Jackson played with a strained hamstring, but will suit up against the Arizona Cardinals this weekend.
Definitely not broken is the key statement as Jeremy Maclin still managed a single catch for 23 yards and a touchdown. DeSean Jackson had 7 receptions for 114 yards, even daring to cross the middle of the field after short-arming most of last season due to contract extension issues.
Johnson, 34-years old, is an eleven year NFL vet, who played for the New England Patriots in 2011. Johnson had trouble assimilating to the Patriots system, and only caught 15 passes on the season. Johnson has been to the Pro Bowl six times, most recently in 2009.
Johnson was signed by the Miami Dolphins during the offseason, hoping to replace Brandon Marshall as one of the go-to receivers. But a domestic violence dispute with his now, ex-wife, in August was the last straw with Head Coach Joe Philbin. Johnson was arrested for head-butting his wife during an argument over his purchase of a box of condoms.
Honestly, I would much rather see Plaxico Burress come in for a try-out. He seemed to be more humbled by his troubled past and served to only help the New York Jets last season until troubles in the locker room erupted and sealed their fate.
We shall see what the day holds for the Eagles and Johnson. Maybe it’s nothing, or maybe there’s more to the drama than just tweet from Johnson.
